World War II

 World War II was a global conflict that took place between 1939 and 1945. It pitted two main alliances against each other: the Allies (led by the United States, the Soviet Union and the United Kingdom, among others) and the Axis Powers (led by Germany, Italy and Japan).

The main causes included resentments over the conditions imposed after World War I, aggressive expansionism on the part of the Axis powers and Adolf Hitler's expansionist policies in Europe.

The conflict involved fighting in Europe, Asia, Africa and on the oceans. It saw atrocities such as the Holocaust, the bombing of cities, and decisive battles such as Stalingrad, El Alamein, and Normandy.

The war ended with the unconditional surrender of the Axis Powers in 1945. Its consequences included the reconfiguration of the world geopolitical map, the creation of the United Nations to promote international peace and security, and the Cold War between the United States and the Soviet Union.
